Painting, and especially very old painting, is a type of art in which the final result, the static image, prevails over everything. All the brushstrokes applied to the surface are like bricks in a façade; each one is necessary and serves a higher purpose. In my series of variations on classical paintings, I faithfully copy the originals and then dilute them in an abstract decomposition, a kind of action painting. I build only to destroy later. Inspired by the tension in the struggle between opposites, I blur an image to free it from its narrative content, emptying it, restoring it to what painting is in essence: colour, fluids, movement, and energy.
My oil paintings are the final, static result of that process. In contrast, this NFT records the entire process, the construction of Michelangelo’s Sibyl and its subsequent deconstruction.
